The Handwritten Hour

Brooklyn , 11217

About this Club

Is handwritten correspondence a thing of the past?! We think not and maybe you will, too.

We happen to be living in one of the most hyperconnected periods of all time, and yet as a society we are so deeply disconnected. The Handwritten Hour is an anecdote to that disconnection helping to coax us out of our self-imposed rabbit holes. It is a letter writing club that brings people together to experience a more intentional form of connection and communication. It goes beyond the demands of instant messages and promotes the power of slowing down by putting pen to the page.

Think of it as a letter writing revival designed to help you develop a practice around this lost art. Whether stationery, stamps, or wax seals are your thing, come give this club a go.

Grab your favorite pen and unplug with us monthly as we meet in different locations throughout the city from hotel lobbies, local libraries, parks, and stationary cafes.

No need for prior experience, only the desire for creative connection and thoughtful communication the good, old-fashioned way.

✨WHAT TO EXPECT

✔️ By convening in different locations, the aim is to offer an engaging club experience that serves as a social, creative outlet that is both traditional and uniquely New York.

✔️ Different monthly themes, such as memory or gratitude, will help inform the direction attendees may take their handwritten messages.

✔️ Each session will last approximately 90 minutes and open with a brief welcome and an optional writing prompt then close with an optional share-out or reflection.

🎒WHAT TO KNOW OR BRING

✔️ Bring your favorite pen and something to write on.

✔️ If you have extra stickers, stamps, and stationery, or any other letter writing tool you’d want to share, bring them along! We’ll have time at the beginning to trade!

✔️ I’ll also have on hand a small collection of the above for those who haven’t yet amassed their letter writing toolkit. So, don’t worry, we got you covered!

✔️ Lastly, consider having the address of the person you wish to write so at the end of the session, letters can be dropped in the mail.

ABOUT YOUR HOST

I’m Jennifer, a Brooklyn-based creative and self-proclaimed letter writing enthusiast. I was raised in a home where writing thank you notes for any given gift or gesture was the norm and sending letters from the summer camp canteen is what we did.

By the time I entered fourth grade and my teacher had organized a pen friend exchange, I was primed to conquer the page when serendipitously I got paired with a ginger haired nine year old from New Zealand. That experience was meant to last a single semester and yet somehow turned into decades.

While the means and methods of communication have changed, we seem to be craving meaningful connection more than ever. The Handwritten Hour is an opportunity to make good on a commitment to return to the page while inspiring others to do the same.
