Kat Vellos

Author of We Should Get Together: The Secret to Cultivating Better Friendships.

Bay Area, CA, USA

I’m the author of the book We Should Get Together: The Secret to Cultivating Better Friendships. I help people create and maintain fulfilling friendships in adulthood—and lately, that’s gotten more specific: Helping adults build friendship and community in neighborhoods and cities that weren’t designed for it. Part of this work includes advocating for cities to become places where social connection is easier and built into everyday life. When I work directly with individuals, my work takes many shapes: figuring out how to fit friendship into your busy life, deepening existing acquaintanceships, and cultivating a more balanced digital life so you have space and time for IRL connections. My background includes UX (user experience) design, community-building, and facilitation. About this FieldTrip

We all have them…those 387 tabs open, waiting to be read. So let’s do it together in a nerdy fun study hall together. We’ll get together, read some of the tabs we’ve been putting off, then give each other tweet-length “book reports” about what we learned.

✨WHAT TO EXPECT

✔️ 5 minutes: Arrive & overview

✔️ 30 minutes: Tab-reading-n-closing time! I’ll play some chill instrumental background music that you can listen to or mute if you want

✔️ 15 minutes: Share what you learned with a small group breakout

✔️ 10 minutes: Full-group checkout & closing

🎒WHAT TO KNOW OR BRING

✔️ Totally optional: If you want to prepare, you can put all your “to be read later” tabs into a separate browser window. Then minimize that window and save it for our session.

❤️ This FieldTrip Includes Optional Breakout Rooms

Breakout rooms on FieldTrips are an opportunity to create meaningful connections with participants from around the world. If you do not feel like joining one for any reason, no worries! We’ll always make sure you have something to do introspectively in the main room.

How to make the most of FieldTrips

The FieldTrips experience is defined not only by what the host has to share, but also by how we show up individually and collectively. The way we show up impacts our capacity to be moved, inspired, and activated.

Show up fully

Get ready to be immersed! Engage with smiles, nods, waves, emojis. Share in the chat. Get cozy. Turn off notifications. Sip your favorite beverage.

Stay curious

Wear your beginner’s hat. Go with the flow. Welcome the stumbles and fumbles. Congratulate yourself for trying. Keep going!

Celebrate your host

Our hosts are members of the CreativeMornings community—just like you! Everyone comes to this with different backgrounds—a lot of our hosts have never done anything like this before! And we love that! Cheer them on when something goes awry and when it goes perfectly.

Support each other

We’re all figuring things out in real time. Celebrate, rather than critique emerging ideas. Cheer each other on as you try new things.  Try “Yes! And…” in conversation.

Not vibing?

It’s 100% okay when a FieldTrip does not resonate with you. Pop out quietly and try another experience later. Fill out the survey with your feedback (no dms to host or chat commentary, please.)
