About the speaker
Sonya is a Fort Worth native whose passion for journalism was ignited at the Bob Schieffer School of Communication at Texas Christian University, where she earned degrees in news-editorial journalism and strategic communications. Having contributed to NBC 5/KXAS-TV, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and Fort Worth, Texas: The City’s Magazine, she was thrilled to return to the journalism field after more than a decade managing member relationships and organizing events for nonprofits including Lena Pope and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
One of her most memorable interviews was with Detective James Jim Leavelle, who was escorting John F. Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald through Dallas Police Headquarters when Oswald was shot in 1963.
She has volunteered for Lena Pope since 2011 and currently serves as an executive officer of the organization’s Board of Directors.
Sonya grew up working in her family’s restaurant, Los Vaqueros, in the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards, and lives in Fort Worth with her husband, daughter, and one lucky rescue dog.
She’s a regular in the toddler bounce-house birthday circuit and absolutely delights in being a parent. Find her visiting museums, local playgrounds, or the library. Sometimes Pilates. Always with coffee.
