About this FieldTrip

Social media is part of daily life for many of us. And scrolling through our feeds has become such a habit that we rarely make space to pause and think critically about what we’re seeing.

In this FieldTrip, we’ll each intentionally slow our scroll and take a closer look at our feed on a social media platform of our choice.

By building greater awareness of what’s being shown to us, we can start to feel more agency over our social media usage. This is also a great mini-exercise in media literacy.

We’ll consider:

• The content of what shows up in our feeds

• The sources for what shows up in our feeds

• What our response/reaction is to what we see

✨WHAT TO EXPECT

✔️ You’ll have time to reflect on and orient yourself to the social media feed you’ve chosen

✔️ Your host will share a brief introduction of the evaluation exercise and walk everyone through the template

✔️ Then, you’ll have extended time to independently evaluate your feed

✔️ After we’ve all collected some data, you’ll be invited to reflect on your experience with the group (totally optional!)

🎒WHAT TO KNOW OR BRING

✔️ Come prepared with one social media account you want to evaluate.

✔️ Be able to be on the Zoom call AND review your social media feed—on the same screen, a second screen, or a second device. (e.g., Join Zoom from your computer, and open social media on your smartphone).

✔️ We’ll share an evaluation template that you’re welcome to use, but otherwise bring your preferred way to document your findings (e.g., notebook + pen/pencil, digital notes, voice recorder).

✔️ Optional: Some favorite background music to keep you company during our independent evaluation time.

ABOUT YOUR HOST

Ashley is a non-coercive marketing consultant. She’s curious about how we can have a more intentional relationship with social media as “users”, marketers, and humans. She shares her perspective through her emergent business, Ease Up Consulting.

How to make the most of FieldTrips

The FieldTrips experience is defined not only by what the host has to share, but also by how we show up individually and collectively. The way we show up impacts our capacity to be moved, inspired, and activated.

Show up fully

Get ready to be immersed! Engage with smiles, nods, waves, emojis. Share in the chat. Get cozy. Turn off notifications. Sip your favorite beverage.

Stay curious

Wear your beginner’s hat. Go with the flow. Welcome the stumbles and fumbles. Congratulate yourself for trying. Keep going!

Celebrate your host

Our hosts are members of the CreativeMornings community—just like you! Everyone comes to this with different backgrounds—a lot of our hosts have never done anything like this before! And we love that! Cheer them on when something goes awry and when it goes perfectly.

Support each other

We’re all figuring things out in real time. Celebrate, rather than critique emerging ideas. Cheer each other on as you try new things.  Try “Yes! And…” in conversation.

Not vibing?

It’s 100% okay when a FieldTrip does not resonate with you. Pop out quietly and try another experience later. Fill out the survey with your feedback (no dms to host or chat commentary, please.)
