Desire on know how FAKA is a counter institution that is meant to shelter everybody who is alienated by mainstream culture

About the speaker

Desire Marea is a writer, musician, and artist who currently forms one-half of South African Art duo FAKA, who deal primarily with issues of black queer identities. Through a hybridised expression of intersectional body politics, FAKA aims to humanise underrepresented realities.

After being formally established in 2015, FAKA has since been contributing to the global dialogue on gender expression through various mediums ranging from video, photography and literature, music and live performance. Apart from their performances at the local Stevenson Gallery, FAKA’s work has been screened internationally at the South London Gallery in London, The Supermarket Art Fair in Sweden, and featured in the Nataal group show at Frieze NY.

FAKA were named by 10 and 5 as one of 9 breakthrough artists of 2015; by Unlabelled as one of the 8 creatives to watch in 2016, and by Nestlings Awards as the winners of the Young African Performer of the Year Award (2015). The duo is currently preparing to take the stage at the 9th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, taking place in July of 2016.

When Desire is not busy being Desire, he likes to steal your man before calling campus security on you.
