MexMama

part of a series on Matriarchy

About the speaker

Ofelia “MexMama” Faz-Garza is a mama, poet, and cultural worker from Oak Cliff (Dallas) who is inspired by the subtleties of life and the rituals that root us. Her work has been included in several anthologies, including Women in Nature: An Anthology, Outrage: A Protest Anthology for Injustice in a Post 9/11 World, BASTA! 100+ Latinas Speak Out Against Violence Against Women, and the Voces Anthology. Ofelia is also the founder of Cascabel Group, an organization that uses the literary and cultural arts to build community through a variety of initiatives.

Ofelia wants others, especially young girls, to have a confident voice. The daughter of immigrants and family interpreter runs Dallas workshops that encourage reading and writing through her Cascabel Group. ‘I am trying to create the world they deserve.'

Ofelia founded Semilitas Book Club. Semillitas means “little seeds”, and works to plant the seeds that will grow lifelong readers and writers. The mission is to help develop good reading habits, make reading fun, and create comfortable places to discuss ideas and opinions.

Additional details

This month, we shine a light on all the leaders who are also women, from across the vast spectrum of identities and experiences of womanhood. The decision-makers, the life-givers, the caregivers, the frontline workers, the problem-solvers, the world-changers. The organizers and activists, the artists and writers and innovators. The teachers, scientists, medical professionals, politicians, business owners. The ones with megaphones and the ones working behind-the-scenes. Without you, where would our world be?
