Nicolas Regamey of Atelier Typographique de la Cité shares his craft of traditional letterpress printing.

Typography is more than just letters on a page—it’s a craft built on layers of history, technique, and expression. This month’s theme “Layers” was chosen by our Lausanne chapter. A perfect match for Nicolas’ world, where type is shaped by layers of ink, pressure, and intention. Join us as he unpacks the many dimensions of typography.

About the speaker

After completing his training as a multimedia operator and graphic designer, Nicolas Regamey’s passion for type design led him to explore the crafts of printing and letterpress, notably with Jean-Renaud Dagon in Vevey. He also trained in typecasting with the last remaining experts in this highly specialized field.

For the past 20 years, Nicolas Regamey’s workshop, Atelier Typographique de la Cité, located near the Lausanne Cathedral, has been a vibrant space where technique meets creativity. Among the treasures of the workshop, you’ll find a hand press from 1824, a machine for producing the classic cardboard railway tickets, and a Monotype typecaster. All these machines are in daily operation. From business cards to books, the workshop offers an experience that blends artisanal tradition with contemporary design.
