Additional details
Our speaker for February is author, archaeologist and artist Alexandre Mitchell. Join us this Friday to hear about what he has to say on this month’s thematic, Native.
Born in 1974 (Oxford), from British and French parents, he was brought up in the Flanders and Brussels. He then studied abroad and travelled extensively in the course of his research in classical archaeology. Over the last twenty years, he has taught, written and spoken widely in the fields of Greek and Roman archaeology and is a member of several scholarly associations, networks, and research groups in various fields of antiquity.
He is the head of Expressum, a Brussels-based translation company specialising in French and English translations of conference papers and scientific articles written in the fields of Archaeology, Philology and History from Classical Antiquity to the late Middle Ages. He is also a scientific collaborator of the Faculty of Archaeology, Fribourg University and has many links with the University of Oxford where he obtained his doctorate in Classical Archaeology.
Whilst being an academic, Alex started writing thrillers to share his expertise with the greater public, bridging the secluded realm of academic knowledge with the exciting world of fiction. He takes pleasure in weaving facts into a complex narrative brought to life by the conflicting passions of his characters. He also started to paint during COVID and has already made an exhibition presenting his striking art. His Indian ink drawings of historical events and figures offer us a perception of history that is neither smooth nor comfortable. He brings vestiges of our past to life, offering a guided tour of history through his drawings.
