About the speaker

Maria-José Pavlovic is a journalist and documentary filmmaker from Chile. She started her career in the press as a content researcher for a variety of magazines and visual projects. Fascinated by real life subjects and their stories, and after working for several TV documentary series as well as independent films, she studied an MA in Visual Anthropology at the Granada Centre in Manchester, UK. After moving to Paris and meeting the Congolese Diaspora, she made the film “The Yayas de L’Elegance” which received an award at the Russian Festival for Anthropological Films in Ekaterinburg, Russia in 2013, and it has been screened at various festivals around the world.

Her passion and her interests are to find unique subjects and their stories which transition from the real to the surreal, from the ordinary to the language of performance and representation. Some of her research topics include social change, identity, consumerism and migration. She has also collaborated with a wide range of publications in Chile and Europe, having recently been a producer and writer at VIERNES magazine in Chile.
