About this FieldTrip

Dip a toe into the world of typeface design and design your very own simple font in just one session! You can use your own handwriting, or draw from the world of sans-serif, serif, or even monospace typography. Now is your chance to create something that’s totally yours, that you can use in projects and on documents as long as you’d like.

✨WHAT TO EXPECT

✔️ Learn about the inner-workings of typography so you can know what to keep in mind when creating your own font – things like kerning, x-height, and swashes.

✔️ Identify the difference between handwritten text and a handwritten-looking typeface

✔️ Take about 20 minutes to design your simple starter typeface

✔️ Actually digitize it in the same session!

✔️ And start using your brand new font today!!

✔️ BONUS: If you’d like, we’ll swap fonts with each other at the end of the workshop!

🎒What To Bring

✔️ This workshop is easiest if you have access to a printer and a smartphone. A tablet also will work for this. If you have neither on-hand, you can sketch your letterforms and digitize them later on!

about your host

I’m Sarah, a designer, illustrator, and creative technologist in Atlanta, Georgia. I’m the person you call who can inject a little weirdness into something traditionally pretty dry. People hire me to solve tough, design-driven problems, which can be anything from branding new initiatives within existing nonprofits, or figuring out how to translate complex regional planning terminology to the average layman.

As most of my friends will tell you, I also like applying my creativity to personal projects and following my curiosity down weird and interesting paths: building a “snack stadium” for the Super Bowl, compiling a field kit about urbanism, and publishing a newspaper about creativity. I’m pretty good at coming up with hijinks, but I’m not quite so good at sitting still.

I also teach an online course called Design for Non-Designers that goes deep into everything you need to know whether you’re a designer, or just work with one.

How to make the most of FieldTrips

The FieldTrips experience is defined not only by what the host has to share, but also by how we show up individually and collectively. The way we show up impacts our capacity to be moved, inspired, and activated.

Show up fully

Get ready to be immersed! Engage with smiles, nods, waves, emojis. Share in the chat. Get cozy. Turn off notifications. Sip your favorite beverage.

Stay curious

Wear your beginner’s hat. Go with the flow. Welcome the stumbles and fumbles. Congratulate yourself for trying. Keep going!

Celebrate your host

Our hosts are members of the CreativeMornings community—just like you! Everyone comes to this with different backgrounds—a lot of our hosts have never done anything like this before! And we love that! Cheer them on when something goes awry and when it goes perfectly.

Support each other

We’re all figuring things out in real time. Celebrate, rather than critique emerging ideas. Cheer each other on as you try new things.  Try “Yes! And…” in conversation.

Not vibing?

It’s 100% okay when a FieldTrip does not resonate with you. Pop out quietly and try another experience later. Fill out the survey with your feedback (no dms to host or chat commentary, please.)
