Santa Fe Mayor Michael Garcia explores how sense of place, culture, and community shape what it truly means to be “local.”

Mayor Garcia • LOCAL

LEADING LOCAL
Michael J. Garcia is the 44th mayor of Santa Fe. A lifelong Santa Fean, Michael was born and raised here and grew up with a deep commitment to service. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of New Mexico, and began his career with AmeriCorps VISTA, a national service program devoted to alleviating poverty and strengthening local communities.

As mayor, Michael has emphasized transparency, community engagement, and tackling key local issues like affordability, public safety, housing and infrastructure. He lives in Santa Fe’s Hopewell Mann neighborhood with his wife and their three children.

Inspired by the CreativeMornings theme born in Santos, a coastal city known for its maritime history, vibrant culture, and belief that creativity is a path to equality, Michael will explore what “local” truly means through the lens of his own life and leadership.

In this personal and place rooted talk, Michael reflects on how growing up in Santa Fe shaped his values, worldview, and sense of responsibility to community. From neighborhood streets and public schools to public service and City Hall, his story traces how local experiences can spark a lifelong commitment to equity and opportunity.

He will share how creativity, culture, and community traditions are not extras in civic life but essential tools for building belonging and shaping more inclusive policy. Drawing connections between family, heritage, and public service, Michael invites us to see “local” not just as geography, but as relationships, shared history, and the power of people working together to shape the future of their city.
