Shawn Liu

Brooklyn, NY, United States

Shawn lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two kids. He spends his days drawing and making a zine called Neophyte. Occasionally he designs things for the internet. Years ago, he co-founded a NYC technology company, Harvest. If he were to acquire a pet, he’d consider either a cat or a capybara.

About this FieldTrip

Do you have a body of work (drawings, poetry, stories) that you want to collect into a zine? Or do you want to put together your favorite recipes as a zine to share with friends? Or perhaps you’ve always wanted to make a fanzine for Britney but you’re not sure how?

You can make a zine out of anything, as long as it can be printed, and I’d like to show you how. In this virtual workshop, I’ll show you how to make multi-page zines that are meant to be reproduced on a photocopier or digital printer.

And I’ll use your artwork (if you’re interested, see details below), to show you how I lay out a zine and prepare it for an online printer. (If enough people are interested, I can even print out that zine and mail you a few copies.)

✹WHAT TO EXPECT

✔ (15 min) We’ll start with a quick intro on the different ways to make zines.

✔ (20 min) I’ll show you how I make my zine. If people submit artwork, I’ll use your work to make the zine. If not, I’ll just use some of my drawings to demonstrate. And I’ll show you how I use an online printer to print the zines.

✔ (15 min) Q&A: I’ll try to answer any questions you might have. If I can’t answer them, I’ll try to find the answer for you after the workshop. :)

If you’d like to contribute something to the zine…

🎒Submit Your Work!

✔ Email me (zinefieldtrip@mailite.com) 1-2 pages of your work (poems, artwork, photos) and I’ll use them during the FieldTrip to demonstrate how I put together a zine.

✔ The pages can be drawings, pictures, or words (I can format the words).

✔ The work has to be in black & white.

✔ It should fit on half a US letter size paper (8.5" x 5.5"…half of 11")

about your host

Shawn makes a comics zine called Neophyte. The zine isn’t great, but I’ve made ten issues over the past three years, and I’ve learned some lessons along the way. Aside from drawing comics, I try to parent two kids, which really just means that I make them dinner and clean up after their mess. You can see some of my comics and zine on IG (@mrshawnliu)

How to make the most of FieldTrips

The FieldTrips experience is defined not only by what the host has to share, but also by how we show up individually and collectively. The way we show up impacts our capacity to be moved, inspired, and activated.

Show up fully

Get ready to be immersed! Engage with smiles, nods, waves, emojis. Share in the chat. Get cozy. Turn off notifications. Sip your favorite beverage.

Stay curious

Wear your beginner’s hat. Go with the flow. Welcome the stumbles and fumbles. Congratulate yourself for trying. Keep going!

Celebrate your host

Our hosts are members of the CreativeMornings community—just like you! Everyone comes to this with different backgrounds—a lot of our hosts have never done anything like this before! And we love that! Cheer them on when something goes awry and when it goes perfectly.

Support each other

We’re all figuring things out in real time. Celebrate, rather than critique emerging ideas. Cheer each other on as you try new things.  Try “Yes! And
” in conversation.

Not vibing?

It’s 100% okay when a FieldTrip does not resonate with you. Pop out quietly and try another experience later. Fill out the survey with your feedback (no dms to host or chat commentary, please.)
