Shawn lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two kids. He spends his days drawing and making a zine called Neophyte. Occasionally he designs things for the internet. Years ago, he co-founded a NYC technology company, Harvest. If he were to acquire a pet, heâd consider either a cat or a capybara.
Do you have a body of work (drawings, poetry, stories) that you want to collect into a zine? Or do you want to put together your favorite recipes as a zine to share with friends? Or perhaps youâve always wanted to make a fanzine for Britney but youâre not sure how?
You can make a zine out of anything, as long as it can be printed, and Iâd like to show you how. In this virtual workshop, Iâll show you how to make multi-page zines that are meant to be reproduced on a photocopier or digital printer.
And Iâll use your artwork (if youâre interested, see details below), to show you how I lay out a zine and prepare it for an online printer. (If enough people are interested, I can even print out that zine and mail you a few copies.)
Shawn makes a comics zine called Neophyte. The zine isn’t great, but I’ve made ten issues over the past three years, and I’ve learned some lessons along the way. Aside from drawing comics, I try to parent two kids, which really just means that I make them dinner and clean up after their mess. You can see some of my comics and zine on IG (@mrshawnliu)

The FieldTrips experience is defined not only by what the host has to share, but also by how we show up individually and collectively. The way we show up impacts our capacity to be moved, inspired, and activated.
Get ready to be immersed! Engage with smiles, nods, waves, emojis. Share in the chat. Get cozy. Turn off notifications. Sip your favorite beverage.
Wear your beginnerâs hat. Go with the flow. Welcome the stumbles and fumbles. Congratulate yourself for trying. Keep going!Â
Our hosts are members of the CreativeMornings communityâjust like you! Everyone comes to this with different backgroundsâa lot of our hosts have never done anything like this before! And we love that! Cheer them on when something goes awry and when it goes perfectly.
Weâre all figuring things out in real time. Celebrate, rather than critique emerging ideas. Cheer each other on as you try new things. Try âYes! AndâŠâ in conversation.
Itâs 100% okay when a FieldTrip does not resonate with you. Pop out quietly and try another experience later. Fill out the survey with your feedback (no dms to host or chat commentary, please.)
