Using art to push back at systemic injustice: How a one-time project became a permanent organization providing library services, empowering folks with access to literature & building a bridge across housed and unhoused communities.

Street Books operates bicycle libraries 5 days a week for people who live outside and at the margins of Portland. And while it might appear that it’s about books, it’s actually about community. Founder/executive director Laura Moulton spoke about Street Books’ origins, and how she and co-author Ben Hodgson crafted the book, “Loaners: The Making of a Street Library.” The talk ends with readings from street librarians Diana Rempe, Josh Pollock, and Jon Hallman who bring books, reading glasses and friendly conversation to every shift.
