Kim Walmsley

The Empire Theatre

part of a series on Mentor

About the speaker

As a descendant of the oldest continuing culture in the world. Kim believes that all first nations people have inherited a vocabulary of creativity, built into their DNA. Australia’s First Nations people’s language is complex and over 500 hundred dialects was our strength as their connection was knowing how to become. A secret that allowed her Ancestors to survive 60,000 years, untouched. That is a lot of mentoring.

It’s their gift to share story through storytelling, visual art, sound and rhythm through dance and movement. A natural way of knowing and linking our spirit to country. Kims art for as long as she can remember has been her link to her ancestors who have played a huge part in mentoring her back home to remembering her people and purpose.

Through her life she has painted to support her own journey and to help others find the right pathway to their place of knowing. And to also support cultural understanding and awareness, between indigenous and non-indigenous people. She also loved to  empower youth to become the best version of themselves. Mentoring in them that life is our choice no matter the start.

She believes that we are all mentors in our own way and through our connection to ourselves and others we learn and grow, shedding the layers to finding our true selves living in a world that is struggling. We need each other more than ever. To be the mentee and to become the mentor is just one layer to our existence that takes a lifetime to earn and share.
