An intense vocal disorder completely disrupted an opera singer’s journey to perfection and led her to have a richer relationship with sound.

While recovering from muscular vocal fatigue, Kate recognized that although sounds can be about perfection, they can also simply be about raw and open communication. The imperfect sounds that she was making could actually resonate deeper with people through the very fact that they were imperfect.

About the speaker

Originally from Ann Arbor Michigan, Kate moved to Cincinnati to study Opera at Cincinnati’s Conservatory of Music. After graduating, she found she didn’t quite fit into that carefully practiced world and left to experiment with and play her own music. Using just her voice, a looping pedal, and her cello, Kate creates awe-inspiring harmonies. When she’s not performing solo, she can be found playing with a punk project called Lungs.
