Learning How to Say “No” in a World of “Yes And”
A life-changing experience while acting in grad school opened up a world of questions for Jones around not just the physical safety of actors but also the importance of their emotional safety. She entered the male-dominated craft of stage combat direction in the late 80s and found that she was her most successful when she was able to bring her female-ness to the game – when she could communicate with actresses in a way that her male colleagues weren’t able to, especially in sensitive scenes such as assault. Jones talks about how she has used her profession in stage combat to join the consent movement through her involvement with IDI (Intimacy Directors International) and the importance of vulnerability and boundary-setting through healthy communication in the acting world.
