About this FieldTrip

“We are, as a species, addicted to story. Even when the body goes to sleep, the mind stays up all night, telling itself stories.” – Jonathan Gottschall, The Storytelling Animal

Storytelling is our oldest technology. It is a powerful engine of expression, connection, education and enjoyment. And anyone can learn to improve their storytelling skills! Whether you’re looking to be more entertaining at the pub or on a date, land a new job, or pitch a million-dollar idea, storytelling will give you an edge.

This 60-minute introductory session will help participants understand why stories are so powerful, and learn how to recognize, enhance and share the stories in our own lives.

✨WHAT TO EXPECT

✔️ Stories we love: We kick off with a discussion of stories we love and think about why those stories are so impactful/memorable.

✔️ Why stories matter: We take a brief tour of human history and the human brain, and look at what makes stories ever-present and powerfully effective.

✔️ Notes on structure: Using the three-act structure as our template, we’ll look at the shape of stories and the role that change plays.

✔️ Story categories: Stories can usefully be divided into three different categories. We’ll look at those categories and think about how we can group our own stories.

✔️ Exercises: We’ll do a few different exercises that will help strengthen our storytelling muscles, so we’re better equipped to become storytellers in our own lives.

How to make the most of FieldTrips

The FieldTrips experience is defined not only by what the host has to share, but also by how we show up individually and collectively. The way we show up impacts our capacity to be moved, inspired, and activated.

Show up fully

Get ready to be immersed! Engage with smiles, nods, waves, emojis. Share in the chat. Get cozy. Turn off notifications. Sip your favorite beverage.

Stay curious

Wear your beginner’s hat. Go with the flow. Welcome the stumbles and fumbles. Congratulate yourself for trying. Keep going!

Celebrate your host

Our hosts are members of the CreativeMornings community—just like you! Everyone comes to this with different backgrounds—a lot of our hosts have never done anything like this before! And we love that! Cheer them on when something goes awry and when it goes perfectly.

Support each other

We’re all figuring things out in real time. Celebrate, rather than critique emerging ideas. Cheer each other on as you try new things.  Try “Yes! And…” in conversation.

Not vibing?

It’s 100% okay when a FieldTrip does not resonate with you. Pop out quietly and try another experience later. Fill out the survey with your feedback (no dms to host or chat commentary, please.)
