I am a creative facilitator specializing in feelings-related Nancy Drew-ing and emergency team huddles. I’m an enthusiastic communicator, a reluctant diplomat, and have gotten around my allergy to phony business by actually giving a shit about people. As a result, I am never late.

About this FieldTrip

If recent history has taught us anything, it is that we are in this together… whether we like it or not. We may not agree on how we got here, or where we’re going, but if we don’t learn to listen to one another, we’re in trouble.

Empathy for A**holes is a course in perspective-taking for people who have a hard time relating to the effed up viewpoints of others. Developed by an ethnographer with a knack for non-judgment, this workshop teaches advanced skills of observation and self-awareness to seekers and cynics alike.

Learn how to genuinely hear, understand, and at least partially respect just about any bonkers, bananas, or bullsh*t point of view you could possibly imagine. And get yours heard and understood, too. It’s useful, fun, and even kinda spiritual.

✨WHAT TO EXPECT

✔️ Intro: We’ll talk about what empathy is and isn’t, define three distinct types of empathy practice, and why we often get it wrong.

✔️ Quick Orientation: What I meant, what I said, what you heard, and what you understood are four different things–in every communication. In a group conversation, we’ll discuss why that is, and how to clear it up.

✔️ Workshop: Working in pairs in private breakout rooms, we’ll practice 3 specific listening skills in short interviews with one another.

✔️ Reflection: We’ll use two frameworks for interpreting what we’ve heard, and offer one another supportive reflections.

🎒What To Bring

✔️ Materials: participants will need a stable internet connection, adequate sound privacy, and paper and pen.

🚨 This FieldTrip Includes MANDATORY Breakout Rooms

🚨Breakout rooms on this FieldTrip are essential to the experience. It is also necessary for the success of the workshop that all participants stay for the entire duration, as leaving early will prevent your partner to complete the workshop!

How to make the most of FieldTrips

The FieldTrips experience is defined not only by what the host has to share, but also by how we show up individually and collectively. The way we show up impacts our capacity to be moved, inspired, and activated.

Show up fully

Get ready to be immersed! Engage with smiles, nods, waves, emojis. Share in the chat. Get cozy. Turn off notifications. Sip your favorite beverage.

Stay curious

Wear your beginner’s hat. Go with the flow. Welcome the stumbles and fumbles. Congratulate yourself for trying. Keep going!

Celebrate your host

Our hosts are members of the CreativeMornings community—just like you! Everyone comes to this with different backgrounds—a lot of our hosts have never done anything like this before! And we love that! Cheer them on when something goes awry and when it goes perfectly.

Support each other

We’re all figuring things out in real time. Celebrate, rather than critique emerging ideas. Cheer each other on as you try new things.  Try “Yes! And…” in conversation.

Not vibing?

It’s 100% okay when a FieldTrip does not resonate with you. Pop out quietly and try another experience later. Fill out the survey with your feedback (no dms to host or chat commentary, please.)
