About the speaker
Dr. Roxanne Newman is a cardiothoracic surgeon on the Heart Team at the Sanford Health Medical Center Fargo. She specializes in providing the latest in heart surgery and heart procedures for patients.
She grew up in Avolake, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. She went to college at Akron University, to Cleveland for general surgery, and on to Buffalo, New York, for her cardiothoracic and was recruited out of training to come to Fargo in 1993.
Dr. Newman is a pioneer in the area of “off-pump” or beating heart bypass surgery. In 2003, most heart surgeons stopped the heartbeat and used a heart-lung machine during surgery to keep people alive. By using beating heart bypass, it resulted in better outcomes for patients including a reduced need for blood transfusion, faster recovery, reduced risk of bleeding, stroke and kidney failure and reduced cognitive problems including memory and difficulty thinking.
In her spare time, Dr. Newman enjoys music, sports, golfing and water activities.
