Commonplace Lit

About this Club

They say to write what you know but does that mean you should ONLY write what you know? To what degree can writers experiment with different perspectives, like writing from the point of view of a person who is a different race, gender, or sexuality? We’ll explore this topic together by considering the responsibility writers have when creating diverse worlds outside their own experience, including relevant examples in the literary world today. Have any thoughts? Join us on May 3rd to dive deep into with fellow readers!

The aim of this club is to create intentional conversation around topics in literature that make you think deeper and consider new perspectives.

We’ll explore a new question at every meeting through games, interactive activities, and Socratic discussions. Every meeting will look a little different based on our topic.

ABOUT YOUR HOST

I’ve been a voracious reader since I was a little kid; books are something that have always been a part of my life. I studied English at UT and went on to teach for four years with middle and high schoolers.

Now, I want to use what I’ve learned to give others a space to have deep conversations about books and how they change our lives.

Reading can be a lonely hobby; my goal is to build community and help us see how what we read can support us in leading a more fulfilling life.
