New Mexico has a long history of art, influenced by indigenous cultures, Spanish colonial style, and the arrival of the moderns in the early 20th century. Christian Waguespack gives a vibrant talk surveying these influences and and some of the artists who have made New Mexico a vibrant center of creativity and the fine arts.

About the speaker

Christian Waguespack, Head of Curatorial Affairs at the New Mexico Museum of Art, has immersed himself in the world of modern and contemporary art, and art of the American Southwest for many years, using his talents to organize over a dozen exhibitions and conduct research on the Museum’s collection. He likes to dive deep into the careers of historic artists and art groups from the area, bringing fresh and timely new looks at the regional art of the last century.

New Mexican Art History is anything but dry! Christian will share what made him fall in love with the stories at the heart of our state’s cultural identity, and how he stays passionate about curating new stories in all variety of colors.

He will also offer a behind the scenes look into the newest exhibition at the New Mexico Museum of Art’s Vladem Contemporary, “Off Center: New Mexico Art 1970-2000.” It’s the first exhibition to survey the local art scene during this exciting time. Putting a show together is no easy feat! It’s a dynamic group effort that Christian is happy to lift the curtain on.
