About the speaker
Chris Shearmon is the co-founder of Wild Pearl, a community platform initially conceived as “a house party not in your house.” Since its founding in 2021, Wild Pearl has grown from an intimate gathering space to a full-fledged company, specialising in bringing people together through initiatives as diverse as sober raves and block parties to beach clean-ups and community bike rides.
Over the years, Chris has worn many hats. Originally from the UK, he studied Fine Art before beginning his career in executive search in London, eventually relocating to Singapore in 2012. His path shifted during the pandemic, when hosted house parties that eventually evolved into Wild Pearl. Under this brand, he began new adventures as a producer, host, venue builder, DJ, and even drinks manufacturer. Through it all, he is driven by a desire to make meaning out of diverse experiences, weaving together his interests in music, wellness, technology, and culture into spaces where people can feel a sense of belonging.

New Bahru (Bahru meaning “New” in Malay) reflects the hope of bringing together a new creative community, and is a cheeky nod to our city’s penchant for repeating words for emphasis (like swee-swee, jalan-jalan, play-play…).
Conceptualised and curated by homegrown hospitality company The Lo & Behold Group, New Bahru showcases a different side of our city—soulful, creative, just as it is clean and efficient.“
PPP Coffee believes that every coffee has a story. Each bag and cup is a chance to connect with customers and honour the many hands behind it. Since starting as a small-batch specialty roaster in 2009 — funded by tips from strangers-turned-friends at their humble Hooper Road hideout, Papa Palheta — people have been at their core. Beyond sourcing, roasting, and serving coffee, they aim to inspire and connect communities.
Casual Poet Library is a shared library in Singapore that is entirely community-funded and volunteer-run. Each shelf in our library is rented and curated by a different individual (there are 180 of us in total) — we tend to our own shelves, share our favourite books and take turns to keep the library open. It’s free to come into the library to browse and read books; to borrow books, library members pay an annual subscription fee of $25/year, which also helps to keep the library open and accessible.
