About the speaker
Growing up in Mahnomen, Minnesota, surrounded by beautiful countryside and fertile farmland, Candace Stock developed a deep connection to nature and a passion for
culinary arts. Her family's dedication to gardening, from her mother's large garden to her paternal grandmother's abundant garden, played a significant role in shaping her culinary journey. The bounty of their gardens, filled with fresh produce, fish, and game,
provided inspiration and nourishment, while her grandmother's perfected pickles, jams, ferments, and fresh baked bread left lasting impressions.
Candace's culinary career began in high school and continued at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. Her travels to France and China further enriched her
culinary knowledge and techniques. Her career path has naturally flowed from walking the countryside of Minnesota to working in various culinary settings across the East
Coast, including large catering companies, small farm-to-table restaurants, mom-and-pop eateries, and food trucks.
Returning to the Midwest, particularly Fargo, ND, to raise her son, Candace received
support from BernBaum's and its owner, which helped shape her career. Hosting community dinners and creating a safe and accepting space for people to enjoy
beautiful food became a testament to the welcoming nature of the Fargo community.
Candace's commitment to sustainable practices and community engagement is highlighted by her connection with Noreen Thomas of Doubting Thomas Farm, where
she hosted cooking demos and foraging tours. Her involvement in the indigenous dinner in Medora and the land blessing ceremony with the Tribal Elder allowed her to share the
benefits of Indigenous foodways with the community.
Being invited to consult for the cafe of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and working as the executive chef is an incredible honor for Candace. The unique
experience of honoring the nation's first people and sharing knowledge of food medicine in the healing properties of the Badlands deeply inspires her. Candace's story is a
testament to the power of food, family, and community in shaping one's purpose and
career, guided by the Creator.
