About the speaker

Calcagno Cullen (Cal) is a socially-engaged artist, arts administrator, and educator. After receiving her MFA at the University of Cincinnati in 2007 she moved to San Francisco to chase art world dreams and utopian visions. During her time in California I worked in Education at SFMOMA and as the Gallery Director for Adobe Books Backroom Gallery. She returned to Cincinnati with the goal of building community through socially engaged art. She co-founded Wave Pool, a gallery, socially engaged residency program, wood shop, studio, and community space, with her husband Skip Cullen in late 2014. The Welcome Project, a social enterprise makerspace and market for and by refugees and immigrants, became an extension of Wave Pool as well as an extension of her continued work with refugee communities in Southern Italy. Her life mission is to create empathy and understanding through art. When not organizing programs and projects, working with artists, collaborating with neighbors, or developing her own artistic practice, she is adjunct teaching, cooking, swimming, and traveling, often with her daughter in tow.

We’re going to try to start our virtual event a little earlier again to allow for a breakout room session before we get down to business. We’ll send the Zoom details out the morning of the event for everyone registered. See you soon!
