Serendipity is indeed the residue of design.
If somebody has an ugly baby...you should tell them it's an f-ing ugly baby. I think that's important, and one of the reasons why people trust me to make music. I will tell them "That's a bad idea"
Fail as quickly as humanly possible and figure out what not to do.
In the effort to minimize chance, I actually have been maximizing my opportunity for serendipity. The fewer possibilities and probabilities there are, the easier they are to predict and manipulate.
