About the speaker

Our September event is CreativeMorning Raleigh's 150th event! To celebrate the theme Blossom, we have invited back four former speakers to have a discussion on the ways we, as creatives, blossom throughout our own journeys.

Founder of Baldwin& and former Chairman of the One Club in NYC, David Baldwin was also an executive producer for the Emmy-winning film, Art & Copy, and an associate producer for the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning film “The Loving Story”. His advertising work has been recognized by The One Show, Cannes, D&AD, the Clios, the Effies, the Andy Awards, the MPA Kelly’s, Communication Arts and more. He also cofounded the Ponysaurus Brewing Co. in Durham and the author of the Amazon Best Seller, The Belief Economy, How to Give a Damn, Stop Selling, and Create Buy-in. His work and writings have been featured in numerous publications and college textbooks on advertising. Today, David is a songwriter/musician in the band, The Gumbys and started a music publishing company called DAVJAM. He also DJ’s for the community radio station, Gutsy Radio found at gutsyradio.org.

Dr. Cicely E. Mitchell launches big ideas that make large cultural impact. From performance stages, festivals and large-scale music events, Cicely's expertise is a gravitational force for change. As a producer, she leverages extraordinary talent for economic development, convening, curating, and execution to produce events that are win-wins for all parties. She has a proven track record in music programming and artistic direction and is the co-owner of Missy Lane’s Assembly Room, a social hub for music lovers located in the heart of downtown Durham. She is the co-founder of the original Art of Cool Project, a 501(c)(3) jazz presenting nonprofit organization in Durham. Cicely is the former Artistic Director of SummerStage at Golden Belt, an outdoor stage abutting Hi-Wire Brewery and former Creative Director for jazz programming at Beyu Cafe. She recently produced Biscuits and Banjos Festival for Pulitzer Prize Winner, Rhiannon Giddens.

Saleem Reshamwala is a Japanese-Indian-American filmmaker whose recent work has focused on culture, ethnicity and music. Awards include an Emmy-nomination for his work on implicit bias and race while at the New York Times and Best Music Video at the Hip Hop Film Festival in Harlem (for G Yamazawa’s “North Cack”). Outside of film, he hosted two seasons of TED’s “Far Flung,” an audio travel show about ideas. Saleem has also created work for The Guardian, POV, PBS NC and the PBS Digital Studios series “Beat Making Lab,” for which he filmed rappers and beatmakers in Senegal, Ethiopia, Fiji, Panama and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He has studied, worked or hung out in over 50 countries.

The panel will be moderated by Anita Rao. Anita is an award-winning journalist, host, and the creator of "Embodied," a nationally-distributed radio show and podcast about sex, relationships & health from North Carolina Public Radio WUNC. She grew up in an immigrant, mixed-race family in the Midwest, and this constant straddling of worlds fueled her curiosity about identity, connection and power — all themes she explores in her work. Before starting Embodied, she spent seven years working for WUNC's former statewide, daily talk show "The State of Things"; co-hosted a radio show and podcast about millennial feminism in the South; and worked for the StoryCorps production department. She's a proud graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill where she majored in Women's Studies and International Studies.

Our global theme for September is Blossom.

Every blossom is an act of becoming. The quiet force of roots pushing through the dark, the slow unfurling of a bud, a sudden burst of color. But plants don’t blossom on command. Each flower requires the right amount of sunlight, water, and nourishment across the cycle of the seasons.

It’s the same for creativity. Our next idea lies dormant, while we fertilize our mind. With attention, protection, and space to play, our work becomes what it is meant to be. Petal by petal, the passion inside us bursts into a glorious bouquet.

But remember that flowers don’t bloom purely for their own sake. They share their fragrance, attract pollinators, and serve the larger ecosystem. Your creativity needs to pollinate as well. So, share your gift. Spread more ideas, more beauty, and more courage.

To truly blossom, you must take the risk of opening up. This is your season. You deserve to be seen. Offer your abundance of color to the world!

Ask yourself, “what within me is ready to blossom?” “What can I nurture to help others do the same?”

This month’s theme was chosen by our Pereira chapter chapter in Colombia and illustrated by Edwin Morales.
