About this FieldTrip

Artivism, or art + activism, provides an opportunity for individuals to examine the world around them and make positive change whenever possible.

Together, we will make zines that will create an exploratory space for us to examine the institutions that we want to change and together discuss new alternatives.

While each participant will create their own zine, we’ll collectively share and discuss ways that we make change in our own communities.

✨WHAT TO EXPECT

✔️Introduction of Facilitator / Agenda / Flash Icebreaker

✔️ Virtual Social Justice Mural Tour (an examination of examples of artivism in the community + beyond)

✔️ Brief background on zines + material preparation

✔️ Art Creation + Sharing of prompt “What is the world we want to build?”, examples of institutions, time to get started (with the understanding that not everyone will finish their zine during this time)

✔️ Discussion and Feedback

🎒WHAT TO KNOW OR BRING

✔️ Blank pieces of paper (ideally 8.5 x 11), a writing instrument (markers, pencils, pens, colored pencils, etc), scissors (if available)

ABOUT YOUR HOST

Marissa Gutierrez-Vicario is the Founder and Executive Director of Art and Resistance Through Education. As a committed human rights and peace-building activist, artist, educator, and advocate for youth, Marissa launched ARTE in 2013 to help young people amplify their voices and organize for human rights change in their communities through the visual arts.

As a Mexican-American artist, Marissa explores piñata-making, a cultural artform inherited by a family member at the age of seven. Through this artform, Marissa explores impermanence, in the development of art that walks a tightrope between creation and destruction.

How to make the most of FieldTrips

The FieldTrips experience is defined not only by what the host has to share, but also by how we show up individually and collectively. The way we show up impacts our capacity to be moved, inspired, and activated.

Show up fully

Get ready to be immersed! Engage with smiles, nods, waves, emojis. Share in the chat. Get cozy. Turn off notifications. Sip your favorite beverage.

Stay curious

Wear your beginner’s hat. Go with the flow. Welcome the stumbles and fumbles. Congratulate yourself for trying. Keep going!

Celebrate your host

Our hosts are members of the CreativeMornings community—just like you! Everyone comes to this with different backgrounds—a lot of our hosts have never done anything like this before! And we love that! Cheer them on when something goes awry and when it goes perfectly.

Support each other

We’re all figuring things out in real time. Celebrate, rather than critique emerging ideas. Cheer each other on as you try new things.  Try “Yes! And…” in conversation.

Not vibing?

It’s 100% okay when a FieldTrip does not resonate with you. Pop out quietly and try another experience later. Fill out the survey with your feedback (no dms to host or chat commentary, please.)
