Fashion designer Arlinda McIntosh challenges us to reject shrinking with age and instead embrace a life of bold expression, joy, and the power of taking just 44 seconds for ourselves.
Arlinda McIntosh, a fashion designer and stylist with over 45 years of experience, delivered a talk for the April theme “Ember” at CreativeMornings. Known for her voluminous skirt collections under the brand Sophist, McIntosh shared her “Older is Bolder” philosophy, which challenges the societal pressure for people to shrink or soften as they age. During her interactive presentation, she encouraged the audience to reclaim their joy by taking small increments of time—specifically 44 seconds—to dance, play, or simply “be”. She shared personal stories of her creative beginnings, such as making her first skirt from kitchen curtains, and recounted her career designing for icons like Queen Latifah and Mary J. Blige. McIntosh concluded by emphasizing that how one feels inside is more important than the clothes themselves, urging everyone to create their own “red carpet” moments and proposing a community “breakfast ball” where attendees would dress formally to engage in creative activities together.
