Anna Cosgrave discusses equality in the context of the REPEAL Project.
Our event opened with Jackie Hennessy, one half of newly formed Irish/Welsh duo ‘Nuvole’, performing their new song 'Caught Outside’.
Anna Cosgrave is the founder of REPEAL project, an initiative which aims to destigmatise abortion and give voice to the pro-choice movement in Ireland. This project has encouraged many women to share their abortion stories and gained cross-party political support. REPEAL was described by Quartz Magazine as 'changing the way women campaign for their reproductive rights’.
When Anna was in university, she took part in a year long youth-led initiative called 'Wave Change’, which was run by Social Entrepreneurs. This programme enabled her to further develop her idea for changing Ireland’s future, which she has done tirelessly. As when she’s not at the helm of REPEAL, she is by the side of Independent Senator Lynn Ruane for whom she is parliamentary assistant.
With Senator Ruane, Anna has worked on a training initiative called for community and youth workers in marginalised areas of Dublin, called 'Agency and Repeal’. This initiative was chosen by Gudrun Schyman to represent Ireland at a gathering of feminist political activists in The European Parliament in Brussels.
Anna hopes that REPEAL will help any woman whom the Irish state has ever failed by normalising abortion. She hopes that these women will feel more supported, more engaged and more young people will be inspired to become involved in the movement to #repealthe8th.
