Strong communities start with strong schools.
Your why is your ethical compass. Your why keeps you centered; it's what keeps you focused.
What I do is be a principal, but why I do it is because of my mission. What we do is not as important as why we do it.
My Maker moral code would help me navigate this idea of questions of yes or no, what was right and wrong, for me.
We need politicians to be activists.
We need new memes, new visual and written critique, we need to excite with possibilities, and maybe we need to scare people a little as well.
We have to believe that another world is possible, other than the one we’re born into.
We sometimes walk along looking at each tiny little step on the ground, and before you know it you look up and be like, how did I get here?
We learn more from those who don’t have than we do from those that do.
We shouldn’t feel like we’re trapped into doing things against our values, there’s always ways in which we can try and help - whether they’re little or they’re big.
There’s a cost to making ethical decisions and I think you have to be realistic about.
The more I put my personal views into my work, the stronger my work got. I wish I had done that sooner in a way.
What I’m really proud of is that my personal work and my values and my job are the same thing, they’re totally entwined.
The more I talked about politics, the more I talked sort of tricky ethical situations or confusing personal situations that sort of real kind of scary stuff, the more I found people actually responded and related and I felt encouraged to keep going further down that path.
Life is more complicated and more complex than goodies and baddies.
You are uniquely you for a reason... So don't ever settle for mediocrity.
Get outside of your comfort zone. Daily, if you can.
We are teaching children how to be prepared for jobs that do not yet exist in fields that do not yet exist. That’s powerful work. And that powerful work that’s happening in your public schools is going to make our community that much better and that much stronger.
In order to make ethical choices, you need to know what happened before.
If Walmart is doing it, it's done. It's time to move on.
One time they thought I was 65 years old. One time they thought I was a man.
I always believe that if you personally involve someone in your project then the topic becomes much more relatable and it makes it more understandable as well.
I thought a good idea was to visualise these user generated profiles
So I'm not in control over what I perceive. And my information is being withheld from me, based on what the algorithm knows about me.
And because I'm in China, I'm not able to tweet.
Because I'm a girl, I'm only seeing lingerie ads.
These data profiles almost become your virtual identity. And you can almost say instead of 'what you eat is who you are' it's 'what you generate is who you are'.
This image was allowed in the 70's, and now we're not allowed anymore to post it on Facebook. What would this mean for the dutch culture? Would we become more prudish? Or would our image on nudity change?
We're always talking about how we can protect ourselves, but we never talk about against what.
I think the problem is not about storing data. I think it's about the use of data and what corporations do with it. Because for me, data is data and it's just a neutral product. And I think it's the systems actually that are flawed and discriminate users from seeing certain information.
Ethics is about listening to that still small voice within you that tells you what to do. It is not separate from what you do, it is the reason you do what you do.
During the time of The Washington Post, the brand was The Washington Post....Now every 12- year old with an Instagram account—they have their own brand.
To understand the ethics of social media...remember everyone is their own brand. You don't work for the organization now, you are the brand that works for the organization. So if you get in trouble...your going to get your business in trouble.
The right and the wrong of social media - it all starts with you.
We need people with courage. We need people to stand up.
Never take the shortcut.
You have to have a framework for how you do things.
'Ethics' isn't how I do things. . .it's why you're doing them.
Ethics aren't something that a committee makes.
Uncertainty is the new certainty.
With everything that we create, we add to the collective ethics of our community.
