A powerful conversation on the state of public education in Indianapolis — where we are, how we got here, and why what happens next will shape the future of our city.

About the speaker

Tina Ahlgren has served the students and families of Indianapolis as a secondary mathematics teacher for the last 20 years, joining TeamIPS upon graduation from DePauw University in 2005. While currently in her first year teaching in the High Ability and Dual Language programs at H.L. Harshman Middle School, she began her career with seven years at T.C. Howe Community High School, followed by positions at Shortridge High School for Law & Public Policy, Arlington Community High School, and Center for Inquiry School #2. The 2024 Hoosier Educator of the Year, a 2014 finalist for Indiana Teacher of the Year and a recipient of the inaugural Hubbard Life-Changing Teacher Award, Tina has worked tirelessly to support the students of IPS and to continue learning and growing as an educator. With a focus on quality teacher recruitment and retention, and its impact on students, she has been involved in shaping education policy at the state and national level, as well as right here in Indianapolis. Most recently, this work has included serving as the Bargaining Chair for the Indianapolis Education Association, negotiating teacher contracts and working alongside district administration to fight for funding equity at the Indiana State House. Tina is also an IPS parent, with a son and two goddaughters enrolled in IPS schools.
