What is The Hyve?

This is a group for fostering and deepening the storytelling and creative practice behind a project.

It consists of sharing and discussing creative projects and deepening the narrative or meaning behind those projects, including asking questions like “Who is the audience? What do they learn/feel? Where does this happen? What is the impact on the community?”

We will also participate in storytelling and creative exercises, as well as occasionally bring ideas or projects to staging spaces like open mics or workshops to gauge audience/community response.

Why The Hyve?

The hardest parts of creative practice are finding community, procuring resources, and actually doing the thing.

We’re all so busy and have so many demands on us. The Hyve is an opportunity to make this a little bit easier by having structured, dedicated time focused on you and your project.

✨WHAT TO EXPECT

✔️ Social time, decompress, engage in conversation and sharing.

✔️ Inspiration - The group collectively shares one inspirational author or performer or creative, and discusses (the idea is that our inspiration moment is from a finished project that we could see ourselves completing).

✔️ Creative Exercise - One creative writing or storytelling exercise, like object writing, pass the story, or something similar. No prerequisites.

✔️ Project Roundtable - People discuss, one by one, their project or song or practice they are working on, answering the following questions: “"What is it? What do you want it to be? What’s got you stuck? How can we help?”“

✔️ Commit Roundtable - Each person commits to one goal they will have finished by the next club meeting. I will write them down >:)”

🎒WHAT TO KNOW OR BRING

✍️ Bring your Pen and Paper!

✔️ Here’s a few examples of how you might show up to the Hyve

✔️ You have an idea for an immersive performance and want feedback or thoughts on how to bring it to reality.

✔️ You have a song or a poem you’ve been working on and would like critical feedback (not just “"cool song bro”“).

✔️ You’ve been working on a book or a performance, but are reaching independent capacity and decide that you need collaborators with specific skillsets.

✔️ You just want to practice the independent art of telling compelling and meaningful stories.

This is not a marketing or branding club.

Marketing as a vertical has co-opted words like "storytelling” and “narrative” to mean “how to get a potential buyer or customer to the point that they want to buy your product”. We are using those words in their more traditional sense, like if your grandmother sat you down to tell a story.“

🍿 BYO SNACKS

We keep Clubs as free as possible to make sure anyone can attend. YAY! And… as a result, club hosts are carrying a lot of the financial weight of something like SNACKS. We know that snacks make any gathering so much fun… so we’re trying something new.

👋 If you’re a snack fan, and you’d like to contribute, please bring a snack to share with your fellow Club goers. Nothing fancy. Just something that delights you. That’s it. See you there!

⏰ CLUB START TIME

We offer a 10-minute "Window of Arrival” time where you can get settled, share snacks, sign in, and chat with one another.

👉 For example…If your Club start time is 1:00pm Expect to get things going around 1:10pm.

👉 We offer this flex window because we know folks are coming from many different places around town. With that said, please try your best to arrive before 10 minutes past the start time as the activities will be getting started then!

ABOUT YOUR HOST

Hey! I’m Xander, and I’m a musician, spoken word poet, storyteller and chronic procrastinator. This is a club that helps all of us get over the hump of bringing our vision into reality, not with pomp or flair or grand revelations, but with tiny, dedicated, small steps in the right direction. Most people I know who are creative are silently killed by the demands of the day-to-day and rarely dedicate time to the few things that actually give them life, myself included. The Hyve aims to change that.
