Sunny Sumter of DC Jazz Festival and Giovanni Russonello of CapitalBop give their perspectives on musical ‘Crossover’, DC’s proud jazz legacy and the thriving modern DC jazz scene.
About the speaker
Sunny Sumter is Executive Director of the DC Jazz Festival, a nonprofit organization established in 2004 to create, develop, implement, and support cultural and educational programs in Washington, DC with programs related to jazz, blues, Latin and world music. Its’ signature programs are the annual DC Jazz Festival and the year-round Roberta Flack Education Program. Prior to DC Jazz Festival, Sunny held management/director positions with the Aspen Institute, National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. Sunny earned her bachelor’s degree in music business from Howard University where she minored in jazz voice. As a professional vocalist, Sunny has performed at some of the finest festivals, performance venues, and clubs in the U.S. and internationally. She is a recipient of a DC Commission on the Arts Fellowship and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation Emerging Artist Award. She was awarded the Aspen Institute Achievement Award. Sunny was host of Jazz Central on the BETJ network. She is a member of Americans for the Arts and the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative; and served as a program director member of the National Collaboration for Youth.
