Shaun discusses the punk ethos he instils in all areas of his creative practice
Shaun Featherstone takes a look at the punk ideals that influenced his approach to life, love and work, as curator of Red Shoes Poster archive and in Arts Council Wales.
About the speaker
Shaun Featherstone lives in Cardiff, Wales, UK. His work is rooted in collaboration and social engagement and has become increasingly politicized in recent years. A common thread is the extent to which he is willing to hand over large portions of his projects to be manipulated and used by others â creating situations which invite or even demand collaboration. Described unapologetically as âplatforms for agitation, dissent and activismâ his work includes publications, street installation, meetings and events.
His most significant works include the anti-monarchy newspaper great frock n robe swindle (2012) which pulled together multiple voices in response to the queenâs diamond jubilee and was distributed in its thousands across the UK; RESISTANCE:ASSISTANCE (2014 onwards) a social sculpture activated through shared agency and communal deployment and his current project as founder of RED SHOES Poster Archive (ongoing). These projects seek to open up dialogue with political groups, campaigners and activists, generating and informing new collaborations. An accredited shop steward, Shaun works with trade unions to explore how artists and the organised labour movement can collaborate to support and advance the struggle for social justice.
Shaun Featherstone will offer a personal reflection on how Punk has influenced the development of his cultural practice and creative decision making process. In particular itâs D.I.Y. participatory invitation to go out and make your own culture. Referencing the work and ideas of others, and using examples from his own work he will explore and consider Punk through images, acknowledging itâs interdisciplinary manifestations and contradictions. It will also be a chance to explore the role Punk plays in inspiring radical creativity and working class art.
