“To realize the biggest promises of science, we need to maintain the attention span of society as we mature in our scientific capabilities.” - Swaine Chen

For this month’s theme of #cmPromise we explore the promise of science at the intersection of data, research and creativity

About the speaker

Swaine Chen received an A.B. in Chemistry and Mathematics from Harvard University and an M.D./Ph.D. in Developmental Biology from Stanford University. He moved to the National University of Singapore in 2010, where he is now an Associate Professor of Medicine; in addition, he is a Group Leader at the Genome Institute of Singapore. His research combines his training in medicine and science to understand how and why bacteria are able to cause infections in humans. This is particularly useful for emerging disease outbreaks, which include a bacterial outbreak of Group B Streptococcus in Singapore in 2015 and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He is also a strong advocate for general science education and science communication through both traditional and social media platforms.
