Power to the People: Marketing Your Fine Art Photography Without Gallery Representation

September 3, 10:00am - 11:30am EDT. Hosted at Soho Photo Gallery (NYC)

About this FieldTrip

So, you want to sell your photographs to the public but can’t seem to get your foot in the doors of the galleries and are wondering where do you go from here? You should know that many artists and artisans have had success marketing their work directly to art buyers, without gallery representation, by participating in art fairs, or by creating their own pop-up events. The advantages are numerous; unlike commercial jobs or gallery shows where you have to wait to be paid; With an art fair or a pop-up, you can make a picture today and sell it this weekend, cash in hand. It can be a great, extra revenue stream that you can partake in as much or as little as you like, but it can also have some pitfalls you would rather avoid.

In this talk, Deborah will discuss both sides of the coin to help you figure out whether these venues are for you, and if they are, how to make them work for you.

Some of the topics Deborah will discuss:
-Should you go it alone or go with a group?
-How to determine if Art Fairs are the right venues for you and your work
-How to find the shows, and how to determine if they are “good“ shows for you
-How to apply effectively
-For a pop-up ‘gallery’ show, space is the issue; we’ll discuss how to solve it
-How to present your work, and how to create a display
-Effective sales techniques & marketing strategies for your work for these venues
-How to handle the media and promote your work
-The place competitions could have in your marketing plan
-Being a responsible representative of the photography community

This event will be hosted at Soho Photo Gallery where, September 1 - 7, there will be a pop-up photography exhibit produced by the speaker, and featuring the work of 8 emerging photographers - so you’ll be able to see a pop-up show in action!
