Nandipha Mntambo speaks on the intersection of sexuality and her work.
Taking the stage at CreativeMornings/Johannesburg, Nandipha Mntambo shares the struggle in articulating her voice, representing herself as a woman, and her work and influences. As an artist, working and living in South Africa, Nandipha confronts the animal and human in ourselves through her work, creating images and sculptures influenced by Greek mythology, symbols of femininity, and looking at the self.
About the speaker
Born in Swaziland in 1982, Nandipha graduated with a Masters in Fine Art from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, in 2007. She won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Visual Art in 2011, for which she produced the national travelling exhibition Faena. She has had five solo shows at Stevenson in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and held her first European solo exhibition at Andréhn-Schiptjenko, Stockholm, in 2013. She sculpts and manipulates cowhide to create macabre and beautiful art, exploring ideas of feminine beauty, sexual subversion and unease.
