“Many things we need can wait; The child can not” - Gabriela Mistral

Morag Martindale gives a detailed and passionate talk exploring the theme of Resilient through the lens of self-regulation - the ability to monitor and manage your emotions and thoughts. Morag outlines how this skill is central to everyone’s ability to deal with the difficulties and stressful situations of everyday life, but how we as a society are failing to help vulnerable young people who have missed out on early opportunities to develop this skill. Morag discusses how improvements in our understanding of brain chemistry, psychology and child development have shown the weaknesses in traditional responses to challenging behaviour. She highlights the opportunity offered by understanding self-regulation to help young people who have missed out on early opportunities.

About the speaker

'Improving self-regulation, improving outcomes'

For over 30 years Morag Martindale has worked as a teacher, trainer, coach and consultant in the field of social, emotional and behavioural needs.

Morag co-founded Chrysalis Professional Development in 2006. She writes and presents training and staff development throughout Scotland, working regularly in early years settings, schools, residential settings, and colleges. She provides training and support to several fostering and adoption agencies, working with staff, carers and parents.
Social work teams, health care professionals and childcare sector professionals also use Morag’s expertise to develop the practice of their teams in how they respond to challenging behaviour.

Morag's talk will explore the theme of Resilient by illuminating the opportunity we have within our grasp to help young people, who have missed out on early opportunities to develop resilience around their stressors, by strengthening their executive functions.

Her wide and varied experiences allow Morag to provide training and coaching that is practical and grounded. She brings with her a depth of knowledge and a passion for helping people to gain more insight into the difficulties faced by some of our most troubled and troubling youngsters. Her belief is that we can, and indeed must, do better by these young people. As long held traditional responses to unwanted behaviours become outdated, the vision more and more becomes to develop improved self-regulation in our young people so that they learn to cope with the stressors or temptations in their individual lives.
