Mark Herbert, CEO of Warp Films, talks through the first 10 years of Sheffield based film company, Warp Films. From leaving his business plan in a draw, following his gut and the importance of a pub meeting. This is a truly inspirational talk!

Mark Herbert is joint CEO of Sheffield-based Warp Films.
Mark was born in Doncaster 1971 and grew up in Conisborough, a mining town in South Yorkshire. After his dad was made redundant in 1982 Mark moved to Cheshire and lived there for 6 years between the ages of 12-18. He attended Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School where he got 10 O levels and 3 A levels. Mark travelled in 1989-90 including a 6 month stay on a Kibbutz in Israel before working on a building site back in UK in 1991 in order to save for University. Mark returned to South Yorkshire in 1991 and has lived in Sheffield ever since, he went to Sheffield Hallam University and got a 2.1 BA Hons Degree in Film Studies in 1994. In 2010 Sheffield Hallam made Mark and Honorary Doctor for achievements in Film. Mark has stayed in Sheffield since 1991 with his wife Anita and 3 children.
After a few months working as runner Mark then worked at Yorkshire film Commission building the locations database and this lead to him becoming a location manager and Mark went on to work on films such as Brassed Off and Little Voice.
In 1991 Mark got his first producer credit on the hit comedy series Peter Kays Phoenix Nights for Channel 4 and a year later he set up WarpFilms with WarpRecords and was committed to establishing a successful film production company in his hometown of Sheffield.
Mark produced Warp Filmsâ first feature Dead Manâs Shoes directed by Shane Meadows in 2004 and since then has gone on to produce the BAFTA winning This Is England and the subsequent TV series' This Is England â86, â88 and â90. He also produced Chris Morrisâ first feature Four Lions, Richard Ayoadeâs debut Submarine and set up Warp X, a low budget film slate that launched the directing careers of talent such as Paul King and Paddy Considine.
Mark has won many accolades for his work; including 5 BAFTAs in both TV and film, the Dunhill Award from the London Film Festival and being named a Courvoisier Future 500 and one of Varietyâs â10 Producers to watchâ.
Most recently he has produced The Virtues a mini-series for Channel 4 which took the top Grand Prix award at Series Mania 2019 and the feature film adaptation of the hit musical Everybodyâs Talking About Jamie, which had its global release last year and was just nominated for Bafta in 2022 for Best British Film.
