Level up your baby’s creative life

April 26, 12:00pm - 1:30pm EDT. Hosted at FieldTrips on Zoom

About this FieldTrip

This is an hour-long interactive workshop with parents and babies.

The first 20 minutes will be an introduction to the work of revolutionary Hungarian pediatrician, Dr. Emmi Pikler and her protégé Magda Gerber, who brought the ideas of respectful baby care to the U.S. and founded RIE® – Resources for Infant Educarers (I am a certified RIE® teacher.) In a nutshell, in order for babies to thrive and be who they are, parents can do less and observe more.

The babies will be on their backs, on the floor (if parents feel comfortable with this) and they will demonstrate for us what babies most need – free movement and free, uninterrupted, self-initiated play. I will talk about the third basic principle of the Pikler® and RIE® approach – mindful caregiving - which enhances connection, communication and peaceful interaction. Studies funded by the WHO demonstrate the benefits to babies when they are raised in this way.

During the second 20 minutes, we will silently observe our babies after I briefly explain how to do this. It’s amazing to see just how creative, focused and in the flow babies who are not hungry, tired or too warm or cold can be when they are left alone with a few objects around them and plenty of safe, physical space.

During the last 20 minutes, we’ll discuss what we saw, what that experience was like and I’ll take any questions. Implementing Pikler® and RIE® principles while we have to shelter at home makes life easier for parents and for babies!
