Leanne Moussa

Bayview Yards

part of a series on Local (lo·cal) | Resident/Native

About the speaker

Passionate about urban development, Leanne Moussa has mobilized community stakeholders to purchase and repurpose multiple historic buildings in Ottawa. Over the past decade, she has led efforts to save a neighbourhood daycare and transform Allsaints, a revitalized 1899 heritage building in Sandy Hill, into a community hub with a: bakery, restaurant (Working Title), and event space. She also led the property’s successful rezoning, ensuring it can be restored and maintained for generations to enjoy.

Leanne is currently Chair of The Other Hill, a charitable organization focused on creating a district for civic engagement in the capital. The group is reshaping Laurier Avenue East, from King Edward to Strathcona Park, into a destination where Canada’s leading artists, authors, and activists can spark the conversations the country needs.

About the theme:

Our theme for March is (LOCAL). It was chosen by our Santos chapter in Brazil and illustrated by (Simone Matias)[https://creativemornings.com/blog/local-illustrator-simone-matias].

Local (pronounced lo·cal) in Portuguese means “being a resident or native to a particular area.”

Our Santos chapter had this to say about the significance of this month’s theme:

“We are proud to be from Santos. The feeling of loving the city but sometimes moving away. The benefits of belonging somewhere.”

Watch this video from our Santos chapter for more on what local means to them.

So, how does where you’re from define who you are? How do different spaces foster that sense of connection? How can we develop and strengthen bonds with the people around us?

It’s time to remind ourselves that community happens in neighborhoods not just on screens.
