About the speaker

Laurie Winkless is a physicist, writer, and science storyteller based in Wellington. After seven years as a research scientist, she spread her journalistic wings. Her writing has since featured in outlets including Forbes, Wired, BBC Wildlife, and The Economist.

Laurie also makes regular appearances on radio and podcasts, and she trains other scientists to be better communicators.

She has written two books to date, both of which were published worldwide by Bloomsbury and went on to be translated into other languages. Her first, Science and the City (2017) looked at the urban landscape in a new way. Her second book, Sticky (2022) is officially about friction....but it's way more interesting than it sounds. Sticky was a finalist for the 2023 AAAS/Subaru prize for excellence in science books. Laurie is Irish, so she likes to chat.
