About the speaker
Judy Woo is a first-generation Chinese Canadian Abstract Intuitive artist, indigenous to Hong Kong, China, and a descendent of a head tax payer. She/They live and grew up on so-called Vancouver Island, known as Lekwungen territories. Judy is always experimenting with multimedia and street art.Judy is a graduate from the Gulf Island Film and Television School. She/They is the founder and curator for her/their art and performance collective called Meltshot Brownie. Meltshot Brownie was born in 2018 to support BIPOC artists and will continue to do so in the future.

“My interpretation of Corruption is showing up at male, dominated art spaces. I like to firmly insert my colorful work and hold space for it . Representation matters everyday. This is not about smashing patriarchy, it’s about neutralizing it. After all, who is going to clean up the pieces of patriarchy?There are many different forms of corruption. For example, corruption can be conventional (all graffiti is junk) or it can be unconventional (All graffiti is art and you pay money for a black tie event to purchase art). Corruption can also be public (spray painting outdoors) or it can be private (hanging graffiti art on the wall). By displaying my street art outdoors and in structured gallery exhibits, my art falls within all of these categories.I hold a vital role in the arts to inspire younger generations and to create sustainability as a way of social change. I hope to contribute to an evolutionary vision of connection by dismantling “bruh culture.” - Judy Woo.
