Make It So: Commitment as a Catalyst for Change With so many outside commitments in life, making a commitment to our own personal path is as important as any other. Commitment has the power to change lives, to help us grow, to keep us wired and inspired. Jonathan Blakeslee is the founder of White Heron Tea & Coffee, based in Portsmouth, NH. In 2006, White Heron became New Hampshire’s first organic tea company, which sold tea at local farmers markets. The company began selling wholesale tea to health food stores, cafes and grocers, soon adding fresh roasted organic coffee to their lineup. A brick and mortar café was added in 2013. In June 2018, White Heron will open Tea Shop Records, a retail tea and vinyl record shop attached to their Café. Jonathan is obsessed with music, and since the age of 13, has launched multiple bands as singer, songwriter and guitarist. His latest project, Jonathan Blakeslee & the Band of Fronds, is set to release a debut album, “Ferris Wheelin’ ” in August 2018. It’s a lazy summer rock album inspired by finding joy in the everyday. His blog, Drink Tea 365, was recently launched at www.drinktea365.com. The blog is an enthusiast’s guide to brewing, drinking and eating your way through the world of tea, including recipes, tips and hacks for the modern tea geek. Jonathan is a graduate of Western Culinary Institute, where he began experimenting with tea in recipes (like “Assam Cashew Cardamom Ice Cream” :) His tea journey began in 1988, when he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. This brought him to Hokkaido, Japan, where he spent a year soaking up all aspects of Japanese culture including a growing passion for green tea. There he also trained in karate, which led him to the Japanese art he trains in today at Portsmouth Aikido. Jonathan lives in Eliot, Maine with his wife Joelle and their cat, Gus.
