About the speaker

Jagoda Wisniewska (b.1987) is a Polish female photographer, living and working in Switzerland since 2014. She holds a BA Hons diploma in Photography & Film studies completed in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2013, followed by a completion of Master of Photography from art school ECAL/ University of Art and Design in Lausanne in 2016.

Her creative practice circulates around concepts of performativity, portraiture, as well as ideas of familiarity. Jagoda’s long-lasting fascination with the mother figure, the dynamics of the mother-child relationship, and its depiction through photography are her points of interest that she continues to explore and research through her artistic practices. She is deeply engaged with subjects around representation of feminine bodies, with a strong focus on the maternal body. Photography ‘s ability to reveal and hide, preserve, or lose through image taking, is what she finds fascinating. What’s more, Jagoda uses photography as a tool that allows her to touch upon universal stories, often within the area of personal and family-oriented. Her projects are to ask questions and to help to construct one ‘s awareness of the visual, by encouraging the viewer to reflect and find ways to connect with their own stories. For Jagoda photography as a medium is as much about separation as it is about capturing a moment – it’s about splitting from that moment.

Interest in photographic book forms and nonlinear storytelling characterizes Jagoda’s identity as a photographer. Working closely within a book form, Jagoda explores multiple possibilities of dialogs between images. Jagoda’s self-published book Czarna Madonna was shortlisted for MACK’s First Book Award, Unseen Dummy Award as well as for Kassel Dummy Award. Her projects have been selected for national and international awards and exhibitions, showing in locations including the UK, Switzerland, Poland, Japan, Germany, Spain, Italy and the US. Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, Jagoda divides her practice between personal projects and commissioned work.
