About the speaker
Harry Pickens is a modern-day renaissance man. An award-winning performing artist, educator, composer, author, workshop facilitator and life transformation coach, his international career as a jazz pianist has taken him to 17 countries throughout Europe, Japan, and the Americas, featuring collaborative performances with hundreds of the world’s top jazz artists and educators, including Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Milt Jackson, and James Moody. Performance credits include recordings on the Blue Note label, international radio and television appearances (including Marian MacPartland’s Piano Jazz), and engagements in top concert and club venues worldwide.
Mr. Pickens has also composed over 100 choral works, including settings of the poetry of Wendell Berry, and his musical adaptation of Suzan Zeder’s Wiley and The Hairy Man received the 2015 American Alliance For Theatre and Education Distinguished Play Award. His composition ‘The Awakening Heart’ was featured in a personal performance for His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
The 2009 recipient of the Kentucky Governor’s Award For The Arts In Education, the state’s highest honor in the creative and performing arts, Mr. Pickens also serves as Artist-In-Residence for the Kentucky Governor’s School For The Arts and served as Ambassador For Artistry In Education at Berklee School of Music during the 2013-2014 academic year. The Emmy®-award winning documentary, Harry Pickens In The Garden of Music, produced by Kentucky Educational Television, featured Mr. Pickens’ solo piano performances while exploring his personal, musical and pedagogical philosophy.
In 2013, Mr. Pickens successfully completed the nation’s first Certification in Applied Positive Psychology program, offered through The Flourishing Center. As a life transformation coach, he develops and shares practical applications of cutting-edge research in the science of well-being. Founder and director of BrainMind ReDesignTM, he helps his individual and organizational clients learn how to rewire their brains for less stress, more joy, greater productivity, and more ease.
Blending his artistic identity with cutting-edge research in peak performance psychology, he has taught over 20,000 musicians how to transform performance anxiety into rock-star confidence through his From StageFright to Standing Ovation workshops and has presented keynote concerts, workshops and seminars for hundreds of organizations in business, education, government, and the arts.
