CEO/Founder at Our Genetic Legacy Inc.
Shellie Baxter is a storyteller, founder, and fearless dream-chaser. After 20 years as a stay-at-home mom, she launched Our Genetic Legacyâa nonprofit that reimagines how history is told by centering the voices of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Through DNA, drones, and digital storytelling, Shellieâs work empowers young people to uncover and preserve their heritage in groundbreaking ways.
She created the We The People Museum, the worldâs first virtual BIPOC history museum, and leads programs like the DRONe Project, History Makers Workshop, and Underwater Explorer Programâturning youth into certified drone pilots, authors, and marine archaeologists.
Shellieâs currently working on her scuba certification, dreams of skydiving in New Zealand, and is always in a playful standoff with the squirrels in her garden. She believes history isnât just what we inheritâitâs what we create.
Are you looking to find your native African and Indigenous ancestry using your DNA results? This workshop will teach you how to maximize your results and develop a research plan focused on finding native African and Indigenous ancestry.
This workshop will use the characters of HBOâs Watchmen to take you on this Legacy Tracing⢠journey.
Participants will learn Legacy Tracingâ˘, a methodology that teaches:
(1) how to maximize DNA results;
(2) find public evidentiary documents;
(3) locate privately held documents;
(4) conduct and publish oral interviews;
(5) examine research in the proper context of American history;
(6) organize research to write legacy stories based on evidence and
(7) strategies and practices for coping with âthe truth.â
Participants should come with a desire to learn more about finding ancestral legacies and have a way to take notes.

Weâre all figuring things out in real time. Celebrate, rather than critique emerging ideas. Cheer each other on as you try new things. Try âYes! AndâŚâ in conversation.
