A collaboration between a documentary filmmaker and two DACA recipients navigating high school and immigration
Navigating young adulthood’s challenging enough without the fear of deportation. Two years after making their documentary film, Ale y Yose, filmmaker Erin Semine Kökdil catches up with Alejandra Matias and Yoselina Bazan. Two DACA recipients, Ale and Yose reflect on the challenges they faced while filming their lives and their current reality as college students in an inhospitable American immigration system.
About the speaker
Erin Semine Kökdil is a Turkish-American storyteller interested in building solidarity and inciting social change through film. Her work deals with issues of trauma, marginalization, and migration and has screened at IDFA, Hot Docs, Camden International Film Festival, and Palm Springs International ShortFest. Prior to becoming a filmmaker, she worked extensively with non-profits and community-led initiatives in the U.S. and Guatemala. She holds a B.A. in Latin American Studies and Spanish from Smith College and an M.F.A. in Documentary Film and Video from Stanford University. She has been awarded a 2020 SFFilm FilmHouse artist residency.
