About the speaker
"Dents and scratches make us what we are."
Flamenco dancer, choreographer, and teacher Elina Robinson – who likens choreography to putting together pieces of a puzzle, one clicking together after the other – will take to the podium to share her take on November’s theme, Liminal.
Robinson, equipped with an appreciation for dance as a medium of self-expression, will delve into the importance of free experimentation within a continuous creative process; a state of being half-done, still on its way – and the beauty of imperfection.
Through her work, Elina aims to close the gap between different cultures through international projects and collaborations, which also transgress the boundaries of art forms. Dancers, musicians, and a video artist from far and wide come together in the Imperfecto collective, which Elina founded in 2015. Elina, who trains regularly in Spain and approaches flamenco from a Nordic perspective, has also sought to unite local artists through the Nordic Flamenco platform, which has reached a global audience online.
Armed with reverence for imperfection and the emotional charge intrinsic to flamenco, Elina sees endless opportunities in the authenticity that is transmitted through dance – the way a dancer reveals their true, incomplete yet all the more enticing self through movement, acting as an instrument of sorts, much like a musician.
Join us to put together the pieces: how does one bring a traditional art form into the present day, and surrender to the process; the joy of an ever-evolving state of being?
