Julio Brenes

Drawthatout

Atlanta, GA, USA

Born and raised in beautiful San Jose, Costa Rica. Then moved to Sydney, Australia. Then Canberra, Then Melbourne. Loved Melbourne so much that two kids and one book sprouted there. Now in Atlanta, brewing coffee at home while drawing dinosaurs with crayons.

About this FieldTrip

Learn to draw a scene from your favorite coffee shop in your takeaway coffee cup.

Whether you are new to drawing or not we will go over the basics of perspective, choosing a scene, framing, basic color techniques, and improvising while you try to capture everything that goes around you over the paper cup’s curved surface.

✨WHAT TO EXPECT

✔️ I will share my cafe photo+papercup drawing session and, comment on the things I choose to draw, while you draw your own, just like Urban sketchers do on the streets!

✔️ You can draw the cafe scene that I will share or use your photo.

🎒WHAT TO BRING

✔️ Ideally, as soon as you register for this event, go to your favorite coffee shop, and get an extra empty paper cup (with the lid!). Take a few photos of the cafe space while you are there if you want.

✔️ As it is difficult for everyone to have an actual paper cup on the day, we could cut and tape paper around a house item like a glass or bottle.

✔️ White paper cup is ideal. If the cup is not white then hopefully you’ll have some acrylic pens similar to POSCA.

about your host

I drew over 80 cafes on their very own takeaway coffee cups while living in Melbourne, Australia. It was fun, relaxing and, it was by far my favorite thing to do for 4 years. Out of that experience, I self-published a book that I launched during a coffee cup art exhibition in Fitzroy, Melbourne. The book got sold in libraries and online.

I studied architecture in Costa Rica, which is where I am originally from. I am the father of two full of energy little boys and, I live and draw with my wife and family in Atlanta, U.S.

How to make the most of FieldTrips

The FieldTrips experience is defined not only by what the host has to share, but also by how we show up individually and collectively. The way we show up impacts our capacity to be moved, inspired, and activated.

Show up fully

Get ready to be immersed! Engage with smiles, nods, waves, emojis. Share in the chat. Get cozy. Turn off notifications. Sip your favorite beverage.

Stay curious

Wear your beginner’s hat. Go with the flow. Welcome the stumbles and fumbles. Congratulate yourself for trying. Keep going!

Celebrate your host

Our hosts are members of the CreativeMornings community—just like you! Everyone comes to this with different backgrounds—a lot of our hosts have never done anything like this before! And we love that! Cheer them on when something goes awry and when it goes perfectly.

Support each other

We’re all figuring things out in real time. Celebrate, rather than critique emerging ideas. Cheer each other on as you try new things.  Try “Yes! And…” in conversation.

Not vibing?

It’s 100% okay when a FieldTrip does not resonate with you. Pop out quietly and try another experience later. Fill out the survey with your feedback (no dms to host or chat commentary, please.)
